Hookah Cleaning and Maintenance Guide

By Divan Dione · Published and updated August 31, 2026

Clean each component according to its material and the manufacturer's instructions. The basic routine is to disassemble the cooled hookah, remove residue, rinse compatible parts, dry everything completely, and inspect seals before reassembly.

Before cleaning

  • Wait until the bowl, charcoal holder, and metal parts are completely cool.
  • Separate the bowl, tray, stem, base, hose, valves, and removable seals.
  • Check the manufacturer's instructions before soaking painted, plated, wooden, electronic, or non-washable components.
  • Do not mix cleaning products or use an abrasive tool on a finish that can scratch.

Clean the base and stem

Empty the base, rinse it with warm water, and use a suitable soft brush when residue remains. Run water through a washable stem and clean its interior with a stem brush. Rinse until no cleaning residue remains, then place both parts where air can circulate.

Check the hose before adding water

Only wash a hose when its manufacturer identifies it as washable. Traditional hoses may contain materials that retain water or corrode. For a non-washable hose, follow its care instructions and replace it when it is damaged, retains persistent odor, or no longer connects securely.

Clean the bowl, tray, and small parts

Remove leftover material after the bowl cools. Clean openings without forcing a tool that can chip the bowl. Wash compatible trays, grommets, valves, and mouth tips separately so residue is not trapped around seals or moving parts.

Dry, inspect, and store

Let every component dry fully before reassembly or storage. Inspect grommets for cracks, confirm valve parts move freely, and make sure threaded connections engage without being forced. Store the hookah in a stable, dry location where glass parts cannot tip over.

Health information

Cleaning helps maintain the equipment; it does not make hookah smoking safe. For health-risk information, consult the CDC's hookah information.
